Pelvic health is an essential part of the body’s core. Brooke Conkin, physical therapist and owner of Conkin Pelvic Health in Edmond, has specialized in pelvic health for more than 15 years, treating a variety of conditions in both children and adults. Drawing on her extensive training, she explains why a healthy pelvic floor matters to our body’s well-being.
Why is pelvic health so important?
The pelvic floor forms the base of our core, working together with the abdominal, hip and back muscles, as well as our diaphragm, to create stability and manage abdominal pressure. To work properly, our ribs must align directly over the pelvis. Postural changes like pelvic tilting or rib flaring can trigger health problems.
What are common pelvic health issues?
In adults, we often treat pregnancy and postpartum issues, pelvic organ prolapses, incontinence, constipation, sexual dysfunction and pelvic pain. Pelvic floor issues contribute to lower back, hip, groin or tailbone pain. Prolonged sitting, bike riding, weightlifting and stress can create tension in the pelvic floor.
What pelvic health issues do kids experience?
For kids, specialized physical therapy can help with bowel/bladder function, pelvic pain and pelvic floor muscle incoordination. If a child is having difficulties with potty training or bedwetting, it may indicate a pelvic issue.
What can new patients expect at Conkin Pelvic Health?
New patients receive comprehensive assessments on posture, mobility, flexibility, strength, breathing and functional movement that result in a personalized treatment plan to treat the whole person, not just the diagnosis. A free 15-minute discovery call is available for those unsure if therapy is right for them.
